Is easyJet to blame for making Geneva ‘worst airport in Europe’?

Cointrin, Geneva’s international airport, posted the worst performance results in Europe in terms of punctuality and reliability of flights during the summer of 2024. The finger of blame has been pointed at easyJet.

New figures, provided by the company Flightright and given to Swiss media Le Temps, revealed that Geneva was the “worst airport in Europe” because of the number of delays and cancellations in summer 2024.
EasyJet was blamed as the main reason for Geneva’s overall poor performance.
The budget airline saw frequent delays and cancellations with 2.62 percent of flights cancelled and 35 percent delayed. In comparison Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris saw just 1 percent of flights cancelled during the summer.

This poses a problem to the airport’s management because it relies heavily on the airline, which represents 46.4 percent of its market share.
“The airport is affected both by repeated strikes by air traffic controllers in France and by staff shortages inherited from the pandemic period in German airports” Oskar de Felice, in charge of legal affairs at Flightright, told Le Temps newspaper.
Bosses at Geneva airport said the blame for delays and cancellations was with the airlines.
“Flight cancellation decisions are the responsibility of the airlines,” Ignace Jeannerat, an airport spokesperson told Le Temps.
“Our efforts are mainly focused on the first wave of departures, which must take off on time to avoid delays in the morning that would only increase throughout the day.”

EasyJet hit back however with an airport spokesperson saying: “All airlines have experienced unprecedented delays this summer due to European air traffic control, caused by a combination of staffing issues, constraints, capacity and adverse weather conditions.”
The question that then arises is whether passengers are entitled to compensation when it by delays and cancellations? It all depends on the reason for the initial problem but if it’s the airline’s fault – for example they didn’t have enough cabin crew to run the flight – then passengers should receive compensation.
